  • Iceland Double Decker pizza adds to fears for childhood obesity

Filed under: News — Posted by: Dr Peter Right on November 12, 2025

A new pizza available at Iceland frozen foods store contains almost a full day’s calorie allowance for a woman, along with 80 percent of the total daily fat allowance, and 9.6g of salt, which is one and a half times the recommended daily amount for men and women. As obesity levels soar, including childhood obesity, experts are concerned that the new Double Decker pizza could contribute to those levels, with a cheap convenient meal which is full of calories, fat and salt.

Stacey Solomon is the face of Iceland, and is shown enjoying a slice of pizza while saying “Love it”. The Double Decker is made up of two pizzas which are sandwiched together with mozzarella cheese, sweet chilli sauce and pepperoni.

Critics are concerned that the pizza, which at 10ins in diameter suggests it is made for one person, doesn’t confer to the targets of the Food Standards Agency. Nutritionist Rachael Anne Hill said:

The mix of sweet from the chilli sauce and sour from the cheese and pepperoni will make this pizza taste particularly moreish which could be a real danger to women to consume one to themselves.

According to a spokesperson from Iceland, the product has been created to share with family and friends, as the advert demonstrates. The spokesperson also said that the pizza was a “fantastic innovation”.

The pizza has 600 calories more than the Asda version, although Tesco still hold the High street record with a 12in pizza that contains more than 3,000 calories. Hill stated that the pizza demonstrated why the waistlines of adults and children were expanding, with obesity in adults and childhood obesity on the increase.
